How the farm pricing calculator works
Most farmers do not underprice because they are careless. They underprice because they never total their real costs. This calculator fixes that in about a minute. You enter what it actually costs to raise, process, package, and sell the animal, plus your own labor, and it does the cost-plus math for you: it divides your total cost by your take-home pounds to find your break-even, then adds your margin to give you a price you can say out loud and defend.
What costs go into pricing your beef?
Four costs, and the last two are the ones farmers forget:
- Raising the animal. The calf, pasture, hay, minerals, feed, vet, water, and a fair share of your fixed costs.
- Processing. The kill fee plus cut and wrap at your locker.
- Packaging and boxes. Insulated boxes, coolant, and shipping materials are a real cost that can add as much as a dollar per pound for shipped orders. Leave it out and it quietly eats your margin. What is break-even versus your blended price?
Your break-even is what you must charge per pound just to cover every cost, including your labor, with zero profit left over. Your blended price is your break-even plus your margin, averaged across all the cuts. That blended number anchors everything: your whole, half, and quarter prices, and your per-cut prices.
Why divide by take-home weight, not live or hanging weight?
Because take-home pounds are what your customer actually gets in the freezer. A 1,200 pound steer hangs at roughly 720 pounds and comes home as about 430 to 540 pounds of packaged meat.
